Eva and Franco Mattes, Emily's Video

Eva and Franco Mattes

A question we get asked often from other artists is what do collectors and museums get when they buy a video edition of ours, so here’s what you get: the above photo is the edition of Emily’s Video, for example. The case protects the content, and makes it safe for storage. Inside the case is the video in different formats: “digital master” (to be kept safe somewhere) and “exhibition copy” (to be used to watch and lend the video). The files are stored in different devices: on hard drives (digital master) and on flash drives (exhibition copy), and each device is in two identical copies (in case one gets damaged). We recommend that the devices be replaced periodically, think to them as the crate containing a painting: you keep the painting (the file) while you periodically change the crate (the hard drive). Then you’d get the certificate of authenticity, the installation instructions and the video conservation instructions.
